Description

WInFiDEL - PCBA Kit

Wireless Inline Filament Diameter Estimator Low-cost Sensor

WInFiDEL is an DIY open-source open-hardware Wireless 3D printing filament diameter sensor.

This design is heavily inspired by the design previously published by Made with Layers.

Key features:

  • Wireless (2.4GHz WiFi) and/or wired (USB) communication
  • Simple API enables third party integration
  • Printer, platform and filament agnostic
  • Built in Web UI for monitoring and calibration

Additional information

Board dimensions: 50mm x 20mm x 15mm
RoHOS, Lead free

What's included in the package?

  • 1x WInFiDEL PCBA
  • 2x 6x2mm (N35) magnts (one + one spare)

We recommend that you put WInFiDEL into an enclosure to avoid damage or short-circuit.

Please note that WInFiDEL ships without an enclosure.
You can 3D print one from the WInFiDEL repository, STL and source files available here.
Or if you want to design your own, a STEP file of the PCBA is also available here.

FAQ

Q: Is this a complete sensor as shown in the video?

No. This is a PCBA + Magnet kit.
You will need to print/source your own 3D printed and mechanical (fasteners, bearings, pins etc) and assemble and calibrate the unit.

Q: What is the accuracy/precision of this sensor?

This is a hard question to answer. Mainly because this is a DIY kit that tries to give reasonably accurate readings while not breaking the bank.
Precision and accuracy of this sensor will depend greatly on multiple factors such as
- Accuracy of 3D printed parts
- Mechanical parts used (bearings, screws/pins, fasteners etc)
- Calibration accuracy
With that said, please keep in mind that this sensor is trying to give a reasonably accurate reading on a budget.
If you need very accurate and/or precise filament sensor, please consider buying a pre-calibrated commercial filament sensor instead.

Project information

Below is the video of how WInFiDEL was designed and developed.

Designed by Sasa Karanovic of Karanovic Research and released as open-source and open-hardware. All source files can be found in the official WInFiDEL repository.
